It’s been over a year since Kīlauea Volcano at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park began a series of rare episodic lava fountaining eruptions at the summit—the first of their kind in nearly 40 years! Over 12+ months, Halemaʻumaʻu Crater has seen 39 eruptive episodes (with a 40th expected soon), with fountains reaching up to 1,500 feet (460 m), reshaping the summit. A new 140-foot (42 m) cinder cone has built, a 220-foot (68 m) rise of the caldera floor has happened, and thick blankets of tephra are piled like black snowdrifts.
